Google Review Policy 2026: What Indian Businesses Must Know

Google may delay, filter or remove reviews that appear fake, incentivised or manipulated. Learn how Indian businesses can request genuine customer feedback while following Google’s current review policies.

Google Review Policy 2026: What Indian Businesses Must Know

Google reviews influence how customers evaluate clinics, restaurants, salons, hotels and other local businesses. But not every submitted review appears immediately—or remains visible permanently.

Google checks reviews for fake engagement, rating manipulation, prohibited content and other policy violations. Here is what Indian business owners should know about requesting reviews responsibly in 2026.

What does a trustworthy Google review look like?

Google does not prescribe an ideal length, star rating or writing style. The most important requirement is authenticity.

A trustworthy review should:

  • Come from someone with a genuine experience of the business.
  • Represent the customer’s honest and unbiased opinion.
  • Relate to the correct business and location.
  • Be relevant, respectful and based on personal experience.
  • Be written voluntarily, without payment, discounts or rewards.

Businesses should not tell customers which rating to choose or what to write. Avoid asking customers to mention a particular employee, service or phrase.

Best practices when requesting Google reviews

1. Ask customers consistently

Request honest feedback from eligible recent customers—not only customers you believe are happy. Selectively inviting positive reviews while directing unhappy customers elsewhere is known as review gating, which Google prohibits.

2. Ask after a genuine interaction

Send the request after an appointment, purchase, meal, stay or completed service, while the experience is still fresh.

3. Use neutral language

A compliant request can be simple:

Thank you for visiting [Business Name]. If you have a moment, please share your honest experience on Google. Your feedback helps us improve.

4. Make the process convenient

Google allows businesses to share a direct review link or QR code through receipts, email, WhatsApp, chat or in-store material.

5. Never offer an incentive

Do not offer discounts, loyalty points, free products, gifts or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review.

6. Avoid pressure and shared devices

Do not require or pressure customers to leave a review while they are still on your premises. Customers should use their own account and device when they are ready.

How Google handles submitted reviews

Google uses automated systems and other signals to evaluate whether reviews comply with its policies. The exact filtering algorithm is not public.

A submitted review may be:

  • Published normally: It passes Google’s checks and appears on Search and Maps.
  • Delayed: Additional policy checks can delay publication for several days.
  • Filtered or removed: Google may identify spam, fake engagement, rating manipulation or prohibited content.
  • Temporarily unavailable: Reviews can be affected by profile merges, reinstatement or temporary posting restrictions.

Automated detection can occasionally remove a legitimate review by mistake. The reviewer or business may contact Google support, but restoration is not guaranteed.

Can a business remove a negative review?

A negative opinion is not automatically a policy violation. Businesses can report reviews that contain prohibited content, fake engagement, harassment, conflicts of interest or other policy violations.

Google normally evaluates a reported review within several days. If Google finds no violation, the business may be able to submit a one-time appeal through the Reviews Management Tool.

When a genuine negative review remains visible, the best response is usually calm, factual and helpful.

What is clearer in Google’s 2026 policy?

Google’s current rating-manipulation rules place greater emphasis on how businesses and staff request reviews.

  • Do not give employees review quotas or run contests based on review counts.
  • Do not ask customers to include specific content or identify an employee.
  • Do not pressure customers to post while on the premises.
  • Do not offer incentives for posting, revising or removing reviews.
  • Do not discourage negative reviews or selectively request positive ones.

When suspicious activity is detected, Google may remove reviews, temporarily restrict new reviews or display a consumer-alert banner on the Business Profile.

A quick compliance checklist

  • Ask genuine customers for honest feedback.
  • Use the same neutral process consistently.
  • Let customers choose their rating and wording.
  • Never offer rewards or discounts.
  • Do not filter customers by satisfaction.
  • Do not use staff quotas or prescribed wording.
  • Respond professionally to both positive and negative reviews.
